Let There Be Light

God's Word works. It shapes and fills. It creates and sustains.

The Apostle John, Jesus’s beloved disciple, gives us insight about this Word of God that was there in creation. He writes:

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God.

All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. —John 1:1–5 [ESV]

In the previous devotional, we saw that the Spirit of God was brooding over the face of the deep. Here, John makes the connection for us that the creative Word of God is Jesus Christ Himself. Nothing that was made was brought into existence without Him. The Trinity—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—all worked together to bring about every aspect of creation.

Jesus, the Word of God, brings more than just literal light into the world. He brings order, knowledge, insight, and righteousness. His perfection shines forth and lights the way for us.

Jesus, the Word of God, brings more than just literal light into the world.

He brings order, knowledge, insight, and righteousness.

Our Response

God brought forth everything in creation out of love. Nothing forced His hand to move, or His mouth to speak. What does it mean for you that the infinitely powerful God of the entire universe loves you? In fact, He loves you so much that He sent His only Son to bear the sins of the whole world (John 3:16). How does knowing the love of our Creator change your attitude toward others?

A Prayer for This Week

Thank You, Heavenly Father, for letting us know You through Your Word. Not only have You given us the Scriptures to learn from, You have given your Son to be our Savior. You have orchestrated every aspect of creation, even splitting light from darkness. We look up to the skies and see the unfathomable power of the sun and know that it pales in comparison to your glory. Help us to love You more every day as we meditate on Your Word. In the name of Jesus we pray. Amen

Creation Day 1, Part 2

And God said:
GOD: Let there be light.
And there was light. And God saw the light and it was good. Then He divided the light from the darkness.

And God called the light: “Day,” and the darkness He called: “Night.”

And there was evening, and there was morning of the first day.

– iBIBLE Chapter 1

Scripture reference: Genesis 1:1–3

Out from the dark, deep void of nothingness, God’s Word thundered, “Let there be light.”

God’s Word works. It shapes and fills. It creates and sustains. We experience the light that God created each morning with the rising sun. We see crops grow with the warmth of its light. We close our eyes at the end of the day when the day turns into night.
